Canadian filmmaker Danishka Esterhazy has made a female-centric twist-filled thriller with dark political undertones in her new film Level 16.

Sixteen-year-old Vivien (Katie Douglas) is trapped in The Vestalis Academy, a prison-like boarding school, keeping to herself and sticking her neck out for no one, until she is reunited with Sophia (Celina Martin), as they have not seen each other for a while thanks to another school rule that attempts to deny friendship. The girls of Vestalis Academy have been working hard to enter Level 16 as they work toward their dream of adoption into the perfect home, the final level of their training to become the ultimate examples of femininity. They have internalized the four key virtues of being a “clean girl”: obedience, cleanliness, patience, and humility. All of their training has been leading to this final level, after which they will be adopted into the home of an upper-class family and their lives can truly begin, or so they have been led to believe. Together the girls embark on a dangerous search to uncover the horrifying truth behind their imprisonment.

A cold, dystopian vision with echoes of The Handmaid’s Tale, Esterhazy has made a thematically rich fantasy, which is also a sinister allegory that packs a wicked feminist punch.

Directed by Danishka Esterhazy, Canada, 2018, 102 mins.
