Into the Hourglass is a traveling exhibition from the National Hispanic Cultural Center Art Museum in Albuquerque. It celebrates paños (Spanish for handkerchief) as an art form and the contributions of incarcerated artists to the broader fields of Chicano and American art while examining the topic of incarceration in contemporary society.
Paños are ink or pencil drawings rendered on handkerchiefs, pillowcases, or sheets. They reference a variety of subject matter, including historical themes, religion, popular culture, la pinta (prison life), family, and more. The exhibition pulls from the collection of over 300 paños amassed by the late collector and community advocate Rudy Padilla (1951-2006).
The Art Museum at the NHCC acquired the Rudy Padilla Paño Collection in 2019, the most extensive U.S. public collection of its kind.
