Join us on Friday, Nov. 10 for the opening reception of Karen Gubitz’s exhibition: Materials Matter.
Karen is a self-taught fiber sculptor who started her artistic life as a basket maker. As a fiber sculptor, first and foremost Karen is a materialist. Her exploration of materials and their relationship to the dimensional constructed surface takes advantage of their potency, limitlessness and pliability. Some of her work explores lines and shapes to create patterns. Some of her work uses the flexibility of the fiber to wrap and fold to build dimensionality. Experimenting with various craft techniques she studies the properties of materials to extract their highest possible resiliency and surface potential. As the noted fiber artist and educator, Warren Seelig wrote “When you experience a place it is the materiality that you engage with, and it is the expressiveness of that materiality that makes the place memorable and rich.”
