Braiding a Selfie
@ Awakenings Art
4001 N Ravenswood Ave, Suite 204-C, Chicago, IL 60613
Opening Saturday, August 5th, at 2PM
Braiding a Selfie workshop invites participants to create a self-portrait by braiding together personal materials such as clothing, past artwork, paper and more.
Awakenings’ Braiding a Selfie workshop asks the question “How do we represent ourselves without drawing a face?” and invites participants to create a nontraditional self-portrait through the act of braiding. We encouraged participants to bring in any past artwork, clothing, fibers, paper, plant materials or small trinkets personal to them that they would like to incorporate into their self-portrait braid.
Braiding a Selfie is free with RSVP, and Awakenings will provide all materials. All our workshops are open to survivors, loved ones, and anyone impacted by sexual violence. All genders welcome. Light snacks and beverages provided.
This workshop is facilitated by Raeleen Kao. Her work uses garmentry to carry the weight of her own medical history, a rejection of antiquated gender ideals centered around female reproductive health, and the reclamation of her Taiwanese heritage through the lens of anti-colonization and gender-based intergenerational violence. She is a recipient of the Luminarts Cultural Foundation Fellowship, Illinois Arts Council Agency Grant, and DCASE Individual Artist Program Grant. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Kohler Art Museum, Smith College Museum of Art, University of Richmond Rare Books & Special Collections, and the North Carolina State University Libraries Special Collections.
Awakenings mission is to provide survivors of sexual violence with a trauma informed, inclusive, art-making experience that encourages healing.
