Rodrigo Lara Zendejas: Ephemeral Memorials
Artist’s Talk and demonstration:
Thursday, October 24, 2019

In this series, I used the same materials as found in Mexican cemeteries’ tombs: cans, plastic plants, marble, metal, and wood, combining religious figurines with popular culture and personal mementos. Tombs in this particular Mexican cemetery are ephemeral. People are only allowed to have their family members buried there for 10-20 years—renting the space until someone else uses it. These sacred places (carefully created by the deceased’s family) are eventually destroyed, making these memorials ephemeral, like our memories. Here, cymbals suspend, halo-like, above the pop-culture distorted heads of figures.

The talk and demo are free and open to the public; the demo is part of a GSU Ceramics class, so space and supplies are limited with students having priority.
