Explore the aural architecture of three distinct spaces in the Elks National Memorial with NON:op Open Opera Works and the Midwest Society for Acoustic Ecology.

The Elks National Memorial contains three distinct architectural spaces to explore: the rotunda in the memorial hall, the grand reception hall, and the umbrella room. In each location, participants will be invited to notice the unique aural and visual properties, to listen to and learn about the wealth of sensory information, and to take part in activities specific to each location. These include a relaxation exercise, listening to the ambient sound of each room, experimenting with resonance and frequency, whispering and making your own sounds, and some surprising acoustic effects based on the geometry of the architecture. We will also talk about how the numerous surfaces, objects, materials, and shapes of complex environments contribute to create an aural architecture unique to each space.

ACCESSIBILITY: Aural Architecture and the Elks National Memorial are wheelchair accessible. Wheelchair accessible/gender-neutral restrooms will be available. Please refrain from wearing scented products.
