Perpetual Help
@ ColorCircles
5524 N Broadway Ave, Chicago, IL 60640
Opening Saturday, April 6th, from 7PM - 11PM
Lion VS Gorilla, in partnership with ColorCircles, is excited to announce an intimate group show called Perpetual Help, scheduled for Saturday, 4/6. Featured artists and performers include Cassandra Davis, Lesley Gena, Selden Paterson, Jess Smoot, and Drone Church/MurkCast Meditations. All work and performances centralize themes of belief, persuasion, ritual, and healing.
From the 1970’s until recently, ColorCircles Gallery at 5524 N. Broadway was the site of The Perpetual Help Medical Center, a clinic run by Dr. Felizardo Belga, MD. After Dr. Belga retired, the building was sold, refurbished, and transformed into the art gallery you see today. This is the first gallery show to be held in this former medical center, and we are pretty sure that it is haunted.
To put things into context, “perpetual help” originates from a 14th century Byzantine icon of the Virgin Mary. Artists who painted icons spent weeks in prayer to be spiritually prepared to channel the Holy Spirit while painting, as icons themselves were seen as literal portals to the world of the divine. According to catholicstraightanswers.com, The Our Lady of Perpetual Help icon has bestowed many graces upon the faithful, including miraculous healings.
In an act of considering history and embracing change, join us in saying goodbye to old spirits and welcoming in the new. Convene with us on Saturday April 6th from 7-11pm to mark and ritualize the transition of the space from medical center to art gallery.
