Baby Blue gallery presents a group exhibition of works by Boyang Hou, Nick Fagan, and James McPherson. The works possess a bizarre graphic-ness, in each artist’s respective styles, provoking how we look at art. Boyang’s analytical still lifes subtly shift and mirror color relationships of lighters. Image and object are obfuscated as the representations are full-scale and the arrangement itself often alludes to other historical paintings or icons like the American flag. Nick’s cartoonish works formally mix sculpture and painting and their subject matter is a combination of pop and genre painting. They play dumb well. Finally, James pieces’ clunky stripes of paint at first come across as abstract then shift dramatically to landscape as tiny golfers contextualize them as mowed lines in grass. This destabilizes the act of viewing, turning it into a joke.
