Incarceration: A New Narrative Through the Arts

Mia Ruyter and Isaac Scott will present an Open Platform at Open Engagement 2017: Justice. The Justice-in-Education Initiative [JIE] offers arts and humanities programming for young people at Rikers Island, and for youth through the JUST Arts Storytelling Lab on Columbia University’s campus, to reflect on justice issues. JIE seeks to help those directly affected by incarceration to be the leading voices in advocating for themselves and to educate the public about systemic injustices in incarceration policies as a means to build public support for an end to mass incarceration.
