James Murray: Imagine a Place to be Among Friends
@ Aspect/Ratio
119 N Peoria St, #3D, Chicago, IL 60607
Opening Friday, March 17th, from 5PM - 8PM
On view through Saturday, April 29th
Aspect/Ratio is pleased to present Imagine A Place To Be Among Friends, the first solo gallery exhibition of work by James Murray.
Imagine A Place to Be Among Friends looks to the past, and grows from archival research on vanished queer communities with the intent of radically reframing contemporary sexual politics. Through different discursive media, Murray proposes new conceptions of queer time and space that draw upon the interwoven themes shared by dance music and BDSM culture. Imagine A Place to Be Among Friends celebrates the transgressions of queer discourse.
James Murray is a visual artist and music producer with a BFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston & Tufts University and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His work explores the languages, histories, narratives, archetypes and spaces of queer communities both past and present through materials that include sound, drawing, new media, video, performance and books. James has been exhibited and screened nationally and internationally. He is included in both the Kinsey Institute and the Joan Flash Artists’ Book Collection and resides in Chicago.
