World Philosophy Day: Education to Happiness

Do schools educate to virtue and happiness or do they see themselves as purveyors of technical skills and knowledge that will help students “get by” in life?
Join us on Thursday, Nov. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the National Hellenic Museum for a panel discussion with three philosophy scholars who will discuss educational systems, the idea that virtue is essential to the educational philosophy of Aristotle, and the possibility that we can educate to happiness.
Generously sponsored by the Dr. Arthur G. Nikelly Annual Lecture for the Preservation of Hellenic Heritage and Culture, this event is presented in collaboration with New Acropolis, an international philosophical, cultural and social organization based on the principles of fraternity, knowledge and development.
The panel, moderated by Gilad Sommer, director of New Acropolis Chicago, will feature Anastasia Giannakidou, Professor of Linguistics at the University of Chicago; Mark Jonas, Associate Professor of Philosophy of Education at Wheaton College, and Gonzalo Obelleiro, who holds a PhD in Philosophy and Education from Columbia University.
